About Us
The Pittsburgh AI Safety Coalition is building grassroots support for meaningful AI safety legislation. In 2023, the Center for AI Safety released a statement saying that mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war. The statement was signed by top AI experts and CEOs of leading AI companies. Yet no meaningful legislation has followed.
In March 2026, public figures from across the political spectrum released a pro-human AI declaration. PAISC strongly supports this declaration, and our goal is to mobilize growing public concern about AI into concrete regulation that protects us all from unfettered AI expansion.
Theory of Change
Our primary goal is to build the political salience of AI safety as an issue with the aim of bringing about meaningful legislation at both the national and international levels. We do this by demonstrating to legislators and the broader political ecosystem that a large, bipartisan constituency cares about this and demands action.
Coalition Identity
Nonpartisan
The coalition exists to address one issue: AI safety. We actively seek members across the political spectrum. We understand that our society is in a moment of political polarization but firmly believe that we can come together around this issue, which will touch the lives of everyone in one way or another.
Breadth Over Technical Depth
We are not a policy think tank. Our comparative advantage is showing that ordinary citizens in our politically important swing state care about this issue. We seek out membership from people across all walks of life, whether they have prior technical knowledge about AI or not.
Pittsburgh-focused
Pittsburgh is a fast developing AI hub. Although decisions about AI made anywhere affect people everywhere, living in a tech-focused city gives us unique leverage to move our legislators.
